The impressionist James Abbot McNeil Whistler was born on July 14th, 1834 and died on July 17th 1903. He was born in France but did most of his work in England. Most famous paintings are Whistler’s mother and Nocturne in Black and Gold: The falling Rocket. Two of them are the paintings that I’ll introduce to you.
First, Nocturne in Black and Gold: The falling rocket is the painting that Whistler drew in 10 minutes. Influential reviewer of art John Ruskin said that this painting was just like an insult to art. He didn’t dislike his painting, but he hated the ‘short time’. John Ruskin was going to be the minister before he was painter , and because of that, he believed that the person who is doing diligent labor can only deserve to be saved from Jesus, and whistler’s work with short time was out of step of his thought. Quick-tempered Whistler sued John Ruskin and when the judge asked him “How much time did you use to paint your painting?”, he said “ ten minutes. The most meaningful ten minutes of my life.”
If we think of mothers, we visualize a kind and wise mother. But, When Whistler visualized his mom, he thought of a strict, scary, and far-from-kindness mom. Before he was a painter, he wanted to go into the army like his father did. But, his mother wanted him to be the best painter of history like Picaso, and Monet, so she trained her son a lot. Whistler hated his mother due to that, and one day, his mom said she would be the model of his painting and Whistler painted his mother with anger, disappointment, and depression. He even emphasized the color grey, white and black because he wanted people to focus on the color, not his mother. He didn’t want his mother to be the center and take all the spotlight of his painting. But, surprisingly, people liked his painting ‘Whistler’s mother’. They said they were reminded of their mother when they saw this painting.
when I see the Nocturne of Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket, I think the painting is too pretty and beautiful compared to the time Whistler used to paint this. I also think that he painted the sky and stars very well, and he used the color and paints well to paint the buildings, sky, stars and people on the beach.
When I see the Whistler’s Mother, I think he really emphasized on the color not to make his mother to be the center of his painting. He thought his mother was the worst, but, I can feel that Whistler’s mother really thought of her son and did her best to raise her son even if she educated him hard.
Although James Abbott McNeil Whistler didn't want to be a painter, was weirdo, he greatly contributed to introducing modern French painting to England. He left great paintings to us, and I am sure that he should be respected due to his remarkable works.
